9. Conversation with Dr. David Berri

Creator of Wins Produced Per 48 Minutes

“I spend my life looking at how human beings make decisions and sports is the canvas I use to tell the stories.”

Dr. David Berri is a sports economist and a Professor of Economics at Southern Utah University.

Berri has written several outstanding books, including Wages of Wins, which is the most important book about basketball I have read. Wages of Wins illuminates the deeper game that is going on in front of us but that we often miss.

You can find all of Berri’s books here on his Amazon author page and you can keep up with him on Twitter here.

Berri’s work was featured in the New Yorker article “Game Theory” by Malcolm Gladwell and in Gladwell’s book Outliers.

Berri’s work also figures prominently in my e-book My Journey into the World of... Sports Gambling: Memoir of How an Unemployed University Professor Created a Startup Basketball Betting Empire.

During our conversation, Berri says, “I’m much more of a heretic when it comes to economics.” We discuss gender issues in sports, Allen Iverson, best practices in teaching, the process of outlining, and how our lives today are impacted by medieval Europe.

The rabbit hole goes deep. Enjoy.
